toolbox: New start page and command bar
The start page of the toolbox is now organized in categories like the PDF24 online tools and the new PDF24 Toolbox: favorites, recently used, organize, edit, convert, create, invoices, optimize and repair, security, view and check. A command bar in the header of every page (Ctrl+K) finds every tool, including those that are not on the start page, and the settings. After a result, the new page "Continue with" lets you process the file directly in another tool or save, view, mail or print it.
toolbox: New tool Validate e-invoice
Checks XRechnung, ZUGFeRD/Factur-X and Peppol invoices (XML, PDF, also several files and ZIP archives) with the official rules, explains errors in plain words and shows the invoice in readable form. The result list can be saved as CSV, the report printed. Everything runs on your computer; the invoices are not uploaded.
toolbox: New tool Validate PDF/A
Checks PDF files against PDF/A-1 to PDF/A-4 and PDF/UA-1/2 with veraPDF and explains the findings by topic. The check runs locally and needs the Java component.
toolbox, docTool: Extract attachments from PDF files
A new tool, an entry in the file tools and in the Explorer context menu save the embedded files and file attachments of PDF files under their names, for example the XML file of an e-invoice. Files that are not PDF files are skipped, also within folders. On the command line: -extractAttachments.
toolbox: PDF to Markdown and PDF to TIFF
Convert PDF now converts to Markdown (.md) with headings, lists, tables, footnotes and embedded images, offline with the converter of the online tool. PDF to images can create TIFF files (lossless, color or grayscale, also without Java) and has the option "All images in one folder".
toolbox: Merge with table of contents, cover pages and file names
Merge can add a clickable table of contents and a cover page in front of each file, and print the file name on every page, like the online tool. The bookmarks of the merged files are kept below the bookmark of their file; before, they were lost. This also applies to merging in the Creator and the Assistant.
toolbox: Image watermarks, multi-line text and all languages
Add watermark can place an image (logo, stamp) with size, opacity, position, angle and tiling, and text watermarks can have several lines. Characters that the chosen font does not have, for example Chinese in Calibri, now come from a matching system font instead of showing "?". The new option "Insert as: Graphic / Text" decides whether the watermark can be selected as text. The less common options are in the dialog behind the gear icon, also for page numbers, Convert PDF, Viewer preferences and Protect PDF.
creator, assistant: PAdES signatures with timestamp and validation data
Signing when saving as PDF now creates PAdES signatures with SHA-256 and the certificate chain instead of SHA-1. A timestamp (DigiCert, Sectigo, GlobalSign, FreeTSA or your own service) and validation data for long-term validation (LTV) can be added. Keys on smart cards and tokens are also opened via CNG, and ECDSA keys are supported. If signing fails, a message names the reason and asks whether to save without signature; before, an unsigned or empty-signed file was saved. Self-signed certificates now use 2048-bit keys and SHA-256.
reader: Poster printing and a better print dialog
The print dialog can print a page enlarged on several sheets as a poster, with margin, overlap, cut and alignment marks. It takes over the duplex and color settings of the printer, preselects the last used printer, shows front and back side of a sheet side by side for duplex, turns the sheet for several pages per sheet and prints page ranges in the order entered (5,2,8 or 7-5). The setting "Always print with the system dialog" uses the Windows dialog instead, also for the Creator and the Assistant.
toolbox: Named destinations and bookmark detection in Edit bookmarks
Edit bookmarks can create named destinations for single bookmarks or all of them, so that other programs open the PDF at that place (#nameddest=...), and detects bookmarks from the headings of a PDF. Its texts are now translated. The Reader opens a PDF at a named destination with the command line option -namedDest.
docTool, toolbox: UDF, Outlook messages and .jfif images to PDF
UDF documents (UYAP Doküman Editörü) are converted to PDF, also by drag and drop, context menu and in all toolbox tools. Outlook messages (.msg, .oft) are converted via Outlook, and the PDF gets the name of the message. Images with the extension .jfif or .jpe are converted like JPEG files.
toolbox: Split by entered page numbers, adjustable page previews
Split PDF and Extract pages accept the pages as text ("3, 7, 12" or "1-5, 8") instead of clicking every page. Halving pages has the option "Right to left" for books read from right to left. The size of the page previews can be changed with a slider or Ctrl+mouse wheel and is remembered.
toolbox: Save in the folder of the source file
Saving now suggests the folder of the source file instead of the last used folder. In the settings you can keep the old behavior or set a fixed folder.
assistant: Select several files
Several files can be selected with Ctrl or Shift. The tools then offer "Selected files" in addition to "All files", and printing several files prints them together in one print job.
toolbox: Electronic invoice with the new generator
Create electronic invoice can be switched to the new version of the generator with step-by-step mode, order confirmations, delivery notes, quotes with optional items and bilingual documents. The previous version stays the default. Both versions got many improvements, among them unit symbols instead of codes, the document type as title (credit note, cancellation, corrected invoice), print buttons for PDF results and the electronic address being mandatory only for XRechnung and Peppol.
creator: Name of the first document when merging
The new setting "Use the name of the first document when merging" (settings, PDF24 Creator) gives a merged document the name of its first document instead of Document1, 2, ...
installer: 44 setup languages
The installer is now built with Inno Setup 7 and available in 44 languages, among them Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Korean, Swedish, Thai and Vietnamese.
installer: Updates keep printer settings and custom changes
An update with the EXE setup keeps the settings of the PDF and fax printer (what the printer does, automatic saving with folder, file name and profile, control codes), a custom banner and values that an administrator added to the PDF24 file types (for example EditFlags for Outlook). Before, every update reset them.
pdf printer: Driverless printer accepts PostScript and PDF
The driverless PDF printer accepts PostScript and PDF up to version 2.0 passed through by applications; such a PDF was lost so far. Existing printers get the new formats with the update or at the next sign-in; the queue is then created once again (name and default printer stay, settings stored at the queue, such as the default paper, are reset).
common: PDF24 cleans up its temporary files
Every Java call left a file in the temporary folder that was never deleted. Java now gets its own temporary folder that is removed afterwards, the background process deletes leftovers older than two days, and the uninstallation removes the PDF24 temporary folders and logs.
toolbox: Batch processing continues when a file fails
If one of several files cannot be processed (damaged, cannot be unlocked), the other files are processed anyway and the result page lists the failed files. Before, the whole job was cancelled. This applies to all tools with one result per file.
ocr: Hot folder starts finished files at once
A file in a hot folder of OCR or Compress counts as finished as soon as no program writes to it and its content is complete, so it starts immediately. Incomplete files are shown as "Incomplete" and can be started by hand. OCR also shows skipped pages and notes that the recognition runs on your computer.
toolbox: Excel worksheets per table or per page
PDF to Excel has the new option "Worksheets": one per table (default, as since 11.31.0) or one per page (as up to 11.30.1, including the text outside the tables).
toolbox: Make PDF fillable
The tool Create fillable PDF form is now called Make PDF fillable, like online. Copied fields keep their own name and position, fields with the same name can be linked across pages, arrow keys move fields in fine steps, and fields are placed correctly on rotated or cropped pages. Buttons can trigger "Print" and "Save as", a note says that the default value is only used when the form is reset, multi-line fields get multi-line values, a changed font or font size of a field that appears in several places is kept, and if saving fails, the message says why.
toolbox: Edit, annotate, sign and redact
Images can be pasted from the clipboard with Ctrl+V. Results get a name like file_edited.pdf, closing asks while the result is not saved, a saved signature is inserted in its last size, and choosing a font that may not be embedded in PDF files shows a note. The button that creates the result is called "Create PDF". If saving fails, a message names the reason instead of the save button spinning endlessly.
creator: Folder tree
The folder tree remembers expanded folders until the next start and shows folders with the system attribute like the Windows Explorer, for example OneDrive and Nextcloud folders.
reader: Selection, search and scrolling
Double-clicking selects numbers with separators (100.256,25, 1'000), dates and versions as a whole. The current search hit is orange to stand out from the selection, horizontal mouse wheels and touchpads scroll sideways, and Ctrl+Tab cycles through the open files instead of opening the file dialog after the last one. Double-clicking also selects words in tables, for example in PDF exports from LibreOffice Calc.
settings: Explorer preview can be switched off
The PDF preview and thumbnails of PDF24 in the Windows Explorer can be switched off in the settings (Reader, File Explorer), for the current user or all users.
pdf printer: Driverless printer works with background apps forbidden
If background apps are forbidden (Windows setting, tools, policy), every print job to the driverless printer failed with error 3003 and the printer hung. The installer now allows the PDF24 printer packages to run in the background. If a policy blocks them anyway, a note appears at sign-in and the settings offer "Fix now".
installer: Windows on ARM
The x64 installer refuses to install on ARM64 Windows and points to the ARM64 installer: the emulated driverless printer lost every print job there. When the ARM64 installer replaces an x64 installation, it exchanges the printer packages and keeps printer names and the default printer. TWAIN sources of the ARM64 version are offered again.
mail: Outlook signature is kept
When mailing via Outlook (setting "Outlook OLE"), a given mail text, for example from control codes or a PDF form, is put above the Outlook signature instead of replacing it.
docTool: Command line and file tools
With -silent, the DocTool no longer shows message boxes or password prompts and reports errors on stderr with an exit code, also errors when saving. It no longer attaches to the console of the caller, -convertTo with -outputDir no longer appends " (1)" to the file names, and the file tools open where they were last. Without Ghostscript, EPS files are cropped to their image size as with Ghostscript, and EPS files with a DOS preview header can be converted.
lang: Italian
Many improvements to the Italian translation.
docTool, creator: Text files without the associated program
Text and log files are converted to PDF by PDF24 itself instead of being printed with the program they are associated with, which failed for example when .txt files open in LibreOffice. ANSI umlauts and UTF-8/UTF-16 are read correctly, characters the font lacks (Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew ...) come from matching system fonts, tabs and page breaks are kept and long lines wrap at the page width.
toolbox: PDF to Word and PDF to Excel more accurate
Tables, columns, address and field blocks, shading and images are closer to the original, wrapped cells no longer split words, and Excel no longer refuses to open some of the created workbooks.
compress: Slides, tiled images and fonts
Images that differ only in their transparency mask were taken as duplicates and merged, so several pages showed the same slide afterwards. Images in tile patterns are reduced, so web pages printed from Firefox and newspaper articles get much smaller. With "Optimize fonts", PDF files from LaTeX no longer get distorted or missing letters, and text from PowerPoint PDF files with the same font embedded twice is no longer garbled. PDF files from iLovePDF or Canva no longer show boxes instead of text afterwards.
reader: Saving could delete the original file
When saving, the Reader deleted the original file first. If writing failed afterwards (network drive, other drive, disk full), the file was lost. The file is now replaced only after the new version has been written completely; if saving fails, the original stays and a message names the reason. The tooltip of "Save" now says "Save file" instead of "Save copy", since "Save" saves the opened file.
reader: Comments could not be added
Since 11.31.0, comments ("Add comment") could not be added, also not from the page context menu. Stamps, lines, shapes and freehand drawings can be deleted from the context menu again.
reader: Printing fixes
Since 11.31.0, the print dialog always printed single-sided, the number of copies was ignored by some printers, and PostScript printers missed single characters (for example Romanian ș/ț). Printing without dialog (Explorer "Print", command line, other programs) no longer takes the focus from the program you are working in and no longer shows an empty Reader window. Print errors name the printer and the Windows error. Comments, highlights, stamps and the annotation variants of watermarks, headers and footers and page numbers created in the Reader are printed; they were visible on screen but missing in the printout and in "Create new PDF".
reader: Links, metadata and processes
Links and bookmarks landed at the bottom of the page when the page size was inherited from the page tree. XMP metadata became unreadable when saving compressed metadata or password-protected files. A closed Reader could keep running in the background and delay opening the next PDF, and the Explorer preview no longer leaves Reader processes behind.
pdf printer: Landscape pages and file size with the driverless printer
Since 11.31.0, landscape pages of mixed documents arrived as portrait pages with rotated content, and every font was embedded once per page; a 30-page document had 1.5 MB instead of 244 KB. Both are fixed.
pdf printer: Service of the classic printer
The service "PDF24" did not start (error 1053) when a process of an earlier service was still running, so nothing could be printed. "Save with the PDF24 Windows service" now takes effect within 30 seconds instead of after a restart of the service, and an update no longer loses the service. PDF printers with their own port appear in the settings.
creator, assistant: Saving as PDF
Saving with signature and password protection crashed, and with "Optimize for web" the signature was missing. PDF/A with the color profile "ISO coated" or another CMYK profile is now valid PDF/A, and FOGRA42 is set correctly. Letterheads and overlays of another page size are fitted to the page instead of being placed at the bottom left. Without Ghostscript, the quality levels now also reduce JPEG images, and the place of the signature is saved. Without Ghostscript, only the used characters of fonts are embedded, and the grayscale conversion (also the fax profile) no longer makes photos too light and keeps JPEG photos as JPEG. Without Ghostscript, gradients and the colors of annotations are also converted to grayscale, characters of the Symbol font (for example arrows) are embedded correctly, and Ž, š, ž and – from Acrobat PDF files are no longer lost.
creator: Pages and forms
Deleting or reordering pages and merging in page mode kept the form fields visible but no longer fillable; forms now stay fillable. Deleting a page or inserting a blank page from the context menu of a page could make the other pages disappear temporarily, and rotating while collating selected pages hit the wrong page. When collating, reordering and splitting pages, bookmarks with the same name are all kept, and a bookmark whose page comes after the one of its sub-bookmark still points to its page.
assistant: Save as image
Since 11.31.0, saving as PNG, JPG, BMP or TIFF via the PDF24 printer did not work.
docTool: Conversion via the associated program
Files that are printed by their associated program, for example HWP files with Hancom Office, did not arrive when the program started slowly: the PDF24 printer stayed default printer for only 5 seconds. It now stays until the job has arrived. If the default PDF24 printer is missing, the message now says so.
ocr: Korean and other languages
OCR in Korean, Greek, Serbian, Azerbaijani, Uzbek and some other languages failed with "Could not open data file". Pages with only spaces as text were skipped as text pages, and OCR no longer writes duplicate output files.
toolbox: Edit bookmarks could not save
Saving failed for PDF files with bookmarks without destination, with web links or with a named destination missing in the file, and the save button stayed disabled afterwards. "Change text" no longer shows the new title on all sub-bookmarks as well.
toolbox: E-invoice PDF/A and invoice percentages
ZUGFeRD/Factur-X invoices are marked as the PDF/A-3B they are instead of PDF/A-3U and no longer claim to be tagged, which made accessibility checkers stop; they get the invoice number as title. Create invoice rounded percentages such as 7.8% to whole numbers. With your own PDF and your own XML, the XML is embedded unchanged and the PDF follows its profile (an XRechnung stays an XRechnung); PDF files with nested attachments no longer lose the XML. The recognition of PDF invoices retries on connection errors and explains a missing connection (company network, firewall or ad blocker) instead of showing "Failed to fetch".
toolbox: Further fixes
If the bundled WebView2 does not start, the one installed in Windows is used. Files that are not on the disk (for example an image dragged from the browser) no longer make the upload hang, the window position is also remembered after a crash, page separators of PDF to TXT work, and -htmlToPdf returns exit code 1 instead of crashing. Edit metadata no longer deletes the XMP metadata when an entry is missing in the PDF (PDF/A files lost their conformance). PDF to Text and Compare PDF take the values of filled-in form fields into account, page numbers, text watermarks and file names when merging are placed correctly on pages with a shifted visible area (crop box), watermarks and page numbers in Thai, Indic and other complex scripts are set correctly, merging tries a second method when a damaged file is nested too deeply, and the opened command bar is no longer covered by the file preview.
common: Java on 32-bit Windows and setup of the x86 version
On 32-bit Windows, Java did not start, so Java functions returned nothing. The x86 version now contains a real 32-bit Java runtime.
settings: Language and update mode
Old language names in the settings switched the language to Arabic when saving; the new entry "Automatic" uses the language of Windows. The chosen update mode jumped back to "Automatic" after saving.
shellExt: Explorer crash on right-click
Since 11.31.0, the Explorer could crash on right-click on Windows 10 when an older version of a Visual C++ library was loaded.
installer: Component selection and MSI properties
/COMPONENTS changes Ghostscript, QPDF, Tesseract, Java and the PDF printer only when it names them; in 11.31.x it deselected other components. The MSI properties PRINTERTYPE and FAXPRINTER have the default value "auto" so that deployment tools show them, and an invalid PRINTERTYPE cancels the installation with a message. The installer engine is signed as well. If the PDF24 service does not start, the MSI installation no longer ends with error 1920 and a rollback. The new MSI property WEBVIEW2=No installs PDF24 without the bundled WebView2; REMOVE=WebView2 alone installed nothing on a new installation, the installer now stops with a message instead.
common: Message of the feature policy
The message for a disabled function said "not available in your country", which was never correct.
reader: Save flattened lost text
"Save flattened", splitting, extracting pages and pages dragged out of the Reader lost text in simple TrueType fonts, for example headings of Word forms created on macOS (since 11.31.0).
ocr: Text layer and error messages
Arabic, Hebrew and other right-to-left text is the right way round in the recognized text, copying and searching gave every word backwards. A PDF that was already recognized no longer gets a second text layer, the old invisible one is replaced. PDF files with only a permissions password gave a damaged file and are now saved without encryption, the text layer lies on the text also on pages with a shifted visible area (crop box), and "Auto-rotate pages" leaves pages without recognized text as they are. If the recognition of a page fails, the list shows an error with the reason instead of "done" with 0 words; on the command line, an unknown profile ID for -applyProfile ends with an error.
pdf printer: Date and time in the auto-save file name
An environment variable PDF24 does not know (for example one created after PDF24 started) in the file name of the automatic saving prevented date and time from being replaced; now only the variable stays as text.
common: Folders in use and the image editor of the screen capture
A folder from which a PDF24 tool started the background process (for example via the Explorer context menu) can be renamed and deleted again; the process kept it in use until signing out. "Open in image editor" of the screen capture did nothing when no editing program is associated with PNG files; now Paint opens, or else "Open with".
